Zine Abhidin Zouggari
Hallo ik ben Zine Zouggari ik studeer fiscaal recht aan de Universiteit Maastricht. Momenteel bekleed ik de functie van voorzitter bij de ISVM. Ik ben lid van de ISVM geworden omdat ik een bijdrage wil leveren aan de moslimgemeenschap van Maastricht en omgeving en wil bijdragen aan een betere ontwikkeling van moslim jongeren om aan het hoger onderwijs te gaan studeren.
Hi there, I am Zine Zouggari I am currently studying fiscal law at the University of Maastricht. At the moment I am the chairman of ISVM. I became a member of ISVM because I would like to give a contribution to the Muslim community in Maastricht. I also want to contribute to a better development of the Muslim youth especially to motivate them to study on a higher educational level.

Via de voorzitter ben ik op de hoogte gekomen van ISVM. Ik ben eerst lid geworden van ISVM tijdens een zeer geslaagde Iftar met heerlijk eten! Sinds kort zit ik in het bestuur en vul ik de functie in van penningmeester, wat mij tot nu toe zeer bevalt. Ik heb eerdere bestuurservaring als penningmeester bij een zaalvoetbalclub, en het was dan ook logisch dat ik met mijn studie en diploma deze post bekleed. Ik heb namelijk al een HEAO bedrijfseconomie diploma op zak, maar ik had nog niet genoeg van al dat studeren! Ik zit nu in het tweede jaar international economic studies op de economische faculteit. Het is enorm zwaar in vergelijking met het hbo, maar wel veel interessanter en uitdagender. Wij zijn nu nog in een startende fase maar gair insha Allah als iedereen zijn beste beentje voor zet komen we een heel eind!
Via the current chairman I came in touch with ISVM. I first became a member after a very successful Iftar with delightful food! Recently I became a board member and fulfil the position of treasurer, which pleases me well. I already have board experience as a treasurer in an indoor soccer team, so it was quite logical that with my studies and diploma I take this position. I namely already have a diploma in business economics, but I wanted to continue my studies. I am now in my second year and follow the international economies studies programme at the economic faculty. It is much harder in comparison with my previous education, but much more interesting and challenging. We are now still in a start up period but gair insha Allah if everyone puts his mind and soul into it we will come very far!

Maastricht staat bekend als een Bourgondische rustgevende stad waar al dan niet een weerspiegeling te zien is van de Nederlandse samenleving. Echter, wij moslims, zijn doordrongen van het feit dat de moslims in Maastricht vrijwel niet te bekennen zijn zonder vergrootglas. Met name de studenten zijn zeer verspreidt en zijn waarschijnlijk niet eens allemaal op de hoogte van elkaars bestaan. De ISVM is mede opgericht om moslim studenten bij te staan in hun leven in de hedendaagse westerse maatschappij.
Alhamdulilah, we zijn al aardig op weg; ik was verbaasd over het feit dat er überhaupt moslims studeren aan de Universiteit van Maastricht. Tijdens mijn introductie voor mijn opleiding ‘University College’ betreurde ik het dat er weinig tot geen moslims zijn bij UCM. Ik had ook niet beter moeten verwachten aangezien ik de situatie van Maastricht ken als geborene en getogene.
Ondanks dat moslimstudenten in de minderheid zijn, moet men sterk in zijn schoenen staan, weten hoe men (juiste) kennis over de Islam kan verkrijgen, weten hoe men de Islam kan presenteren en weten hoe men anderen tot de Islam kan uitnodigen.
Insha’Allah zullen we iets moois bewerkstelligen waar Allah Subhana Wa Ta’ala tevreden over kan zijn en Zijn zegeningen over kan brengen.
Maastricht is well-known, and seen as a burgundy and tranquil city, whether or not one might find a representative reflection of Dutch society. However, we Muslims are fully aware of the fact that Muslims in Maastricht are hardly to be noticed without a magnifying glass. Especially students are widely spread and are probably not even aware of each other’s existence. The ISVM is therefore established to support Muslims in their live in this contemporary western society.
Alhamdulilah, we are on a good track; I was astonished by the fact that there even are Muslim students studying at the University of Maastricht. During the introduction of the study ‘University College’ I started, I felt bad about the fact that there were few till none Muslims at UCM. I should not have expected anything else actually, given that I am familiar to the situation of Maastricht as I am born and raised in Maastricht.
Even though students with an Islamic background are a minority, one should stand steadfast in their shoes, one should know how to derive (correct) knowledge about Islam, one should know how to present Islam and one should know how to invite others to Islam.
Insha’Allah we shall accomplish beautiful things which Allah Subhana wa Ta’ala can be satisfied about and give us His blessings.

In 2004 ben ik begonnen met de rechtenstudie in Maastricht. Tijdens de eerste weken viel me gelijk iets op: ‘ Jeetje, hoeveel studenten verenigingen kent de universiteit! ’Overal waar je je bevond zag je flyers die je je probeerden te lokken om je als lid aan te melden. Maar ik voelde me niet aangetrokken tot geen enkele vereniging. Er was geen connectie, geen interesse van mijn kant. Ik had behoefte aan iets wat bij mij hoorde, iets Islamitisch. Andere steden hadden al iets van een dergelijke Islamitische studenten vereniging. Toen het idee kwam om een Islamitische Studenten Vereniging op te richten, was ik Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala dan ook zeer dankbaar.
I started with my law study in 2004 at the University of Maastricht. During the first weeks I had noticed something: ‘I was surprised by the fact that the university had so many students associations!’ Everywhere you go there were flyers which tried to get your attention to become a member. But I didn’t feel attracted to any of them. There was no connection, no interest from my side. I had a need for something that was close to me, something Islamic. There were several other cities which already had such an association. Suddenly the idea came to start up an Islamic students association together with other students. For that I was Allah Subhana wa Ta’ala very grateful.
